Around Scandinavia: Part Thirteen
In which I was at the top of Bergen
31.05.2025: Tour Day5, Country2,
City5
Good morning from Bergen! I woke
up at 06:30am and had breakfast at 07:30am, food options for me were less here,
but had to eat for energy. Luggage
was loaded in the bus and we left the hotel at 08:30am to reach Fløibanen station.
We passed by the Bergen railway station, Torgallmenningen square and Fisketorget
(outdoor fish market).
Bergen, second-largest city, is a historic coastal gem in Norway, framed by seven mountains and iconic fjords like the Sognefjord and Hardangerfjord. Done with experiencing the fjords, its time for the mountain. Mount Fløyen is one of the "seven city mountains" in Bergen, Hordaland. Its highest point is 400 m above sea level. We reached the station at 9am, queued up for the ride, scanned our tickets and off we went to the top in 7mins.
Fløibanen is a steep funicular that links
Vetrlidsallmenningen, in Bergen city centre, with Fløyfjellet, at an altitude
of 1,050 ft and near the summit of Fløyen. The funicular also has three
intermediate stations, at Promsgate, Fjellveien and Skansemyren. It is easily
accessible right from the city center about 3min walk from the Fish Market and
about 5min walk from the World Heritage Site Bryggen. These were the sightseeing for
today, after Mt Fløyen.
We enjoyed the panoramic view of Bergen city and its waterfront, clicked a group photo and then explored the region on our own for an hour.
There are restaurant, café and souvenir shop and a nice playground for the kids!
Just at the end of the large playground, in between the trees,
“Konglen” – The Cone – is securely attached a few meters above the ground. The
Cone provides visitors a unique nature experience on the city mountain,
enabling you to find peace of mind and inner calm. I explored this area with
Sunita Sao and Sanjivani.
Climbing up from the cone area, we see the herd of goats.
The
goats have names: “Pippi”, “Fløydis”, “Waldemar”, “Spot”, “Trym”, “Gucci”,
“Stjerna”, “Frøya”, “Ferdinand” and “Alex”. The ten cashmere goats were
born in 2020 on Radøy. They are six girls and four boys.
We had a restroom break and gathered at the war memorial stone.
Due to time crunch, we could not explore lake Skomakerdiket and experience canoeing. We boarded
the funicular and were back to the base at 10:30am. Now we had a walking tour
of Bryygen with tour guide Gaedra. We had even wandered around the region yesterday evening. More on this in next post.
